New Hams Award

This award has been introduced to allow New Hams get acquainted with portable operation and the skills that are required to work contacts. It uses the website ontheair.nz which lists places that are available to be used and where log sheets can be recorded as being activated.

This award requires at least two contacts per activation from places selected – can be any Lake, Hut, SOTA peak, POTA park, Island, Local park or reserve, Lighthouse.

Contacts can be made on 80m,10m, VHF, UHF in first 3months of licence thereafter any Ham Band or mode. Repeater contacts acceptable. 

The award is opened to any new ham and needs to be completed within 18 months of obtaining their licence.

Awards will be issued for:

  • BRONZE – 5 ACTIVATIONS
  • SILVER – BRONZE PLUS 5 MORE ACTIVATIONS
  • GOLD – SILVER PLUS FURTHER 10 MORE ACTIVATIONS

Places listed on the website are grouped in districts and regions so places near to a New Hams QTH can be easily selected. When first using the website  registration is required and from then on logging in when uploading logs.
